Notice of Emergency Meeting of All Napili Community Garden Membership

Notice of Emergency Meeting

of All Napili Community Garden Membership

Saturday September 21st 2013 @ 7:00 AM

Dear NCG Members,

At the end of last week the Garden Council received notice that our lease would no longer be a sublease to ML&P through Ulupono, but that we would have our lease directly with ML&P beginning October 1st. We were told that it would make no changes to our lease and would not lose our spot because we are a community project. Unfortunately we have already received a letter that the development of West Maui Villages to the south of us requires the building of an additional water catchment which involves approximately 1 acre of our leased property. This is in the area of our newly planted orchard and our 10×20 plots. Here is the letter –

A new residential development called West Maui Villages is in the final stages of planning.  Instead of doing the development ourselves, MLP has entered into negotiations to sell the property to a developer.  In order to complete the sale and planning process, we are being required to install a drainage basin on a 1-acre area in the community garden.  The planned basin area is shown in the attached pdf.

I know there are some crops growing in this area, but we would like to work together to relocate these crops.  If the community garden has space for these people, please let me know.   If they don’t, we would also be interested in a mauka expansion of the community garden to accommodate these people.

We really need that 1 acre vacated.  Please let me know what would work best for you folks.”

We will gather as much additional information ahead of the meeting as we can. Please make arrangements to attend in order for us to reach consensus about what is best for our community.

About napiligarden

We are a community organization of gardeners farming 180 individual plots to organically grow food for our families and community. Our mission is to cultivate a community rooted in sustainability by providing a place for cooperative organic gardening. The Napili Community Garden organizating council is made up of an active, enthusiastic and engaged group of gardeners who have been busy building infrastructure and have just formalized the structure and governance of our community organization. Ulupono Initiative has generously subleased a 3.6 acre of land just above Honoapi'ilani Hwy for use as the Napili Community Garden. The garden is located on former pineapple lands that have been out of production for a sufficient period of time to be eligible for organic certification.
